Kitten shot with pellet gun, leg amputated
Owen Sound, ON (CA)

Incident Date: Friday, Jun 27, 2008

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Heidi McFaul's black-and-white kitten will undergo surgery today to have its hind leg amputated after it was shot with a pellet gun.

The nine-month-old cat, named Princess, snuck out of the house Friday as McFaul opened the door to take her dog out for an evening walk. It was shot within 20 minutes. City police are asking the public for help in identifying the shooter.

"I just can't believe someone would do that to any animal," McFaul said Sunday.

The Owen Sound woman, who rescued Princess from an abusive home, said she heard a gunshot as she walked back towards her apartment Friday evening. She then heard the scream of a cat and saw a small animal hobbling across the street.

McFaul said when the cat got about halfway across the road, it collapsed. She ran over and was shocked to discover it was Princess.

"She was just crying in pain," she said, holding back tears.

At first, McFaul thought Princess was hit by a car. It wasn't until the cat was examined by a veterinarian that Mc- Faul learned Princess had been shot with a pellet gun. The pellet shattered Princess's leg bone, sliced through its nerves and lodged in the muscle.

McFaul said she faced two options; either euthanize the cat or amputate its leg.

She said she chose the latter because Princess was otherwise fine and alert. The surgery will cost about $500.

Owen Sound Police Services issued a news release Sunday asking for help in identifying the shooter. The incident happened in the 300 block of 6th Street East. Anyone with information is asked to call city police at 519-376- 1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222- TIPS.
