A disturbing case of animal cruelty has Dona Ana Sheriff's Officials questioning a woman in Vado, New Mexico.
Officials with the Mesilla Valley Animal Services Center said they found about 100 large maggots eating a male chow to death Monday.
One of the employees at the center was shocked when she first saw the dog. "I said to the cruelty officer that she should hang the owner because the owner allowed this dog to lay on its property without proper treatment, without proper care," said Beth Vesco-Mock.
The dog was brought to the shelter with wounds to its chest. Its arms were filled with maggots and its fur was badly matted. The chow was in such bad shape, the shelter euthanized it.
"The owner allowed flies to lay eggs on the skin of this dog, which hatched out into maggots and literally laid holes into this dog's body," added Vesco-Mock.
Officers with the Dona Ana County Animal Control say they got a call from a woman in Vado asking them to pick up an injured dog.
She later said she was the chow's owner and told officers the dog got into a fight with another chow last week. The woman told officers the dog was hurt and that she did take him to a vet.
Investigators are still trying to figure out the details of the dog's treatment. References
