Dogs left in hot trailer without food, one dead Clinton, NC (US)Incident Date: Friday, Jun 27, 2008 County: Sampson
Charges: Felony CTA Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Shawn Anthony Wynn
A "horrific" case of animal abuse was discovered late last week by Sampson County Animal Control worker Carmine Colantuono when he was called to a Hanson Road residence, just off Hwy. 421, and found two dogs living in what he termed unimaginable conditions.
A Sampson County man has been charged in the incident.
“When I arrived at the residence and found that there was no one at the residence, I talked with some of the neighbors and they told me that the person who lived at the house was their nephew and he was in Maryland,” Colantuono explained Monday.
“They also told me that they owned the property,” he said.
After given permission to search the premises, Colantuono discovered a pomeranian dead, a puppy and a cockapoo hanging on for their own lives.
“It was about as bad a case as it could get,” he said. “It was hot in that trailer, and you could see the holes on the back door from where the dogs were trying to get out. There was no water or food ... just awful.”
The owners of the property told Colantuono their nephew, identified as Shawn Anthony Wynn, asked them to “leave his stuff alone” and to “not go into the house” until he got back from Maryland. While they did supply some food and water, their concern for the animal’s welfare led them to call Sampson County Animal Control.
Colantuono estimated that the pomeranian had been dead for a “couple of days” before he got there.
Sampson County Sheriff’s officers arrested Wynn early Saturday morning. He was charged with three felony counts of animal cruelty and taken to the Sampson County’s Detention Center and placed under a $10,000 secured bond. Wynn’s trial date will be July 11. References« NC State Animal Cruelty Map
